Fractal trees are interesting because with just a few very simple rules, applied in a very regular manner, you can wind up with a form looks incredibly realistic. The above drawing was created using the on-line L-System generator, LSysWeb. Although it is composed of completely regular sections, iterated the exact same way a number of times, it seems to convey a sense of chaos or randomness like you would find in a real tree or plant. You can experiment with the application to draw an endless variety of trees, as well as other shapes. Although LSysWeb only allows you to use the same set of rules and angles on each iteration, you can still come up with many forms. Other programs allow you to vary angles and lengths randomly to create even more natural looking forms.
