Chaos, by James Gleik
The classic book highlighting the history of chaos theory. You won’t find a lot of numbers, formulas or code in here. But it’s a good book for learning the background of the science, and a good primer on all the different pieces that fall within the subject.
Strange Attractors, by Julien Sprott
This is another classic, chock full of code and formulas. You can find this one for free on line, but not only is the book nice to have, but it comes with a disk with BASIC and C source code for all the programs mentioned in the text. I’ve converted a few of these to ActionScript already.
Chaos Under Control, by David Peak and Michael Frame
This is another nice one with lots of theory, formulas, diagrams. There’s no code, but I was able to take some of the formulas and convert them to programs.
Chaos and Fractalsl, by Peitgen, Jürgens, Saupe
If you are serious about understanding and coding fractals and chaos, this is the book. Hardcover, at least 2 1/2 inches thick, and almost 1,000 pages. Tons and tons of diagrams, formulas, explanations and code. You could go into a room with this book and a computer and not come out for a month.
